A One-Person Engineering Operation
A once live financial app, built and run end to end by one person with the help of AI tools. It has a mobile app, a backend, a data pipeline, a few AI features, payments and bank connectivity. Every decision came back to the same two goals: keep costs as low as possible, and build to a standard that can scale.
The app isn’t publicly viewable, here or on GitHub. If you’d like to see it in action, get in touch through the links below and I’ll arrange more content as evidence.
The shape of it
One mobile codebase serves iOS and Android and talks to a backend API and a database. The pieces are kept separate, so a problem with one outside service doesn’t take down the rest of the app.
Keeping costs low
The backend runs on a self-hosted server behind a free content network and firewall, instead of a managed cloud provider. That cuts hosting costs significantly for the same workload. Everything runs in containers, deploys are automated, and a release to production needs a deliberate manual approval.
Where AI fits
AI is used in a handful of places, each one because it solves a real problem and the cost can be controlled. The main job is cleaning up messy bank data: the same merchant can appear under different names at different banks, and the app needs to know what each purchase actually was. Each merchant is classified once and the answer is reused for everyone, so AI spend grows with the variety of merchants rather than the number of users. The most expensive features are limited to paying users.
Security and privacy
Security is layered so that no single failure exposes user data. There are no passwords to store, sensitive financial data is encrypted, and privacy compliance was built into the data model from the start rather than added afterward.
Running it alone
Error monitoring and automatic alerts for the events that matter stand in for an operations team.
What it covers
End-to-end system design, cost-conscious infrastructure, practical AI integration, security and compliance, and mobile delivery, all handled by one person. I’m happy to go deeper on any of it, just shoot me an email.
